Meet Wolfie, superstar eventing horse. He competes at 3* eventing, he loves cross country and hates dressage, however can perform a nice test when required. Wolfie belongs to Georgie Ormandy, one of the riders sponsored by Costello Animal Backs.
Earlier this year Wolfie came in from the field a little lame, his X-rays were clear and he went on box rest, however he still wasn't sound so another set of X-rays were performed this time they showed up a slab fracture in his hock.
A slab fracture is as the name suggests, whereby the break in the weight bearing bone splits vertically resembling a slab. These fractures occur in the carpal bones (knee) or the tarsal bones (hock). These slabs can be reattached or removed with surgery, or if they are small and not too displaced left to heal by themselves.
Unfortunately this means the end of Wolfies high flying eventing career. Since he was diagnosed with his injury Wolfie has been receiving regular treatment sessions to ensure the rest of his body stays as well aligned as possible. The soreness in the hock lead to him placing additional weight on the other hind limb and the diagonally opposite front limb, this compensation over time was going to lead to additional soreness in the other limbs and through his back as they took the extra strain. The treatment sessions aimed to reduce the soreness and tension caused through compensation and give him the best chance possible of healing well and coming back to a ridden career once healed.
